This video is targeted at GenZ and youth nowadays. Young people among many struggles, can’t seem to be able to create meaningful (romantic) connections. Most of our lives revolves around the superficial: our clothes, make-up, even conversations.

We feel more and more socially awkward, especially after the pandemic we seem to have lost the ability to form more stronger bonds. We become more and more individualistic. You can easily observe this during parties. People usually don’t dance anymore or if they do, they choose to go for techno or electronic music. This way they can still feel alone while being in a crowd.

These videos aim to show, through dance, that we are only human, and in order to create meaningful connections, we need to stop focusing on the superficial and start actually showing our (simple) selves.

The inspiration for this project came from the movie Dirty Dancing.  There are two sides to dance there – first we see classes for families at the summer resort. Everybody comes there to have fun and it brings all resting people together (even the teenagers) . The other way we see dance in this same movie is the actual dirty dancing, which is when all the youth meets and spends the night moving together. Even by watching them dance you can feel all the emotions going on between them – happiness, excitement, arousal... This is one of many examples that explains what dance used to be (not so long ago).

Now, dance has become either (very) commercialized or a way for people to disconnect from their feelings and other people. Especially, over the last years the commercial dance has risen in popularity on YouTube and Instagram (and other social media). The videos have millions of views, so this kind of dance became cool and trendy. Although it’s great to encourage so many people to dance, it is a commercial style which reduces the meaning of dance just to the visuals.

Through this small part of our lives that are simple parties, we can see how young people change and how their mental health is affected by the times they live in.
